Waht is PHC ? What is the principle of PHC?
PHC: PHC means primary health care.
The concept of primary health care came into limelight in 1978 following an international conference in Alma-Ata. It has been defined as,
“Primary health care based on practical, scientifically sound and socially acceptable methods and technology, made universally accessible to individual and families in the community through their full participation and at a cost that the community and the country can be afford to maintain at every stage of their development in the spirit of self-determination.
Principles of primary health care: Primary health care is based on 4 principles,
- Equitable distribution of health services
- Community participation at all level.
- Multi -sectorial approach (Inter-sectoral co-ordination)
- Appropriate technology
Equitable distribution of health services:
All people irrespective of their ability to pay must share health service equally. Rich or poor, urban or rural must have access to health services.
Community participation at all level:
Ø Involvement of individuals, families, communities in promotion of their own health and welfare is an essential ingredient of P.H.C
Ø Community involvement implies that the country should participate in the planning, implementation and maintenance of health services
Ø To make EPI successful in Bangladesh, community participation has a great role.
Multi -sectorial approach (Inter-sectoral co-ordination)
The component of P.H.C cannot be provided by the health sector alone. Primary health care involves in addition to health sector, all health related sector like Agriculture, Food, Education, Industry, Housing.
It is scientifically sound, Adaptable to local needs. It can be maintained with the community resources e.g. Handmade ORS for diarrhoeal diseases.
